Hand blender

The immersion blender is the perfect device for making soups, sauces and creamy dishes. But at prices ranging from $99 to $149 for a high-quality item, you’ll just be spending money on an extra item that you probably won’t use very often. Instead, invest in a good old-fashioned regular blender for $23 on Amazon or a Magic Bullet for $38.

Pod coffee maker

Keurig popularized the pod coffee maker, which lets you brew single-serve cups of coffee with individual plastic pods. Not only are these coffees not environmentally friendly, but coffee experts claim that this method does not produce the most flavorful coffee. At prices ranging from $40 to $139+, not including the cost of the pods themselves, you have to wonder if it’s really worth it. Instead, consider investing in a simple French press, which you can get for as little as $10 at Walmart. You’ll be eco-conscious and enjoy a tasty cup every morning.

ice cream machine

An ice cream maker is another device that sounds like a good idea, especially if you have kids, but it’s actually not very practical. How often are you really going to make your own ice cream? And while you can get manufacturers at different prices, a quality model can cost upwards of $200. That’s what Ben & Jerry’s is for.
